来自拉丁词Capitolium，古罗马主神Jupiter神庙。美国国会大厦以此为名，象征着古罗马的共和精神。最终来自词根cap，头。罗马王政时期第五王Tarquin命令在罗马七座山丘之一的Capitoline Hill上修建朱庇特神庙时，挖出来一个人头骨（caput，拉丁语，与head同源）。罗马人认为这是吉兆，预示罗马人会成为当时与罗马敌对的所有拉丁平原上不同部落的“首领”，山和美国国会大厦俱以此得名。
