来自梵语yoga，连接，天人合一，来自PIE*yeug，连接，词源同join,joke。原指一种精神修行方法，以达到灵魂与天的合一，但后来越来越忽视了精神层面的锻炼，而注重于身体的柔和，手脚合一。本义为连接，在印度练瑜伽在于使身体和灵魂合一，即天人合一，在中国练瑜珈在于使手脚合一或脚头合一，使身体柔软，对应英语yoke,conjugal,join,joint,juncture.=yoga是印度的一种传统修行法，强调调息和静坐，以解除精神紧张，修身养性，在英国常被视为一种健身法。yoga一词系借自梵文，原义为'union,the uniting of the self with the universe’（结合，自我与宇宙合一），汉语“瑜伽”乃yoga之音译。
