在《圣经》的“启示录”中提到，世界末日来临之时，以上帝为代表的善和以撒旦代表的恶两股势力将在一个叫做Armageddon（哈米吉多顿）的地方展开决战。Armageddon这个词来自于希伯来语中一座名为“米吉多”的山（Megiddo，位于现今的以色列）。哈米吉多顿的发音来自希腊语Ἁρμαγεδών（/harmagedōn./），然而在英语中省略了词首的气音而变成Armageddon。根据《圣经》记载，上帝会在此击败魔鬼和“天下众王”。现在，Armageddon已引申出“伤亡惨重的战役”、“毁灭世界的大灾难”、“世界末日”等涵意。
