词根词缀法
来自其创立者18世纪普鲁士物理学家Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit.该词原为南非荷兰语（Afrikaans）。1948年马兰（DanielF.Malan，1874-1959)出任南非第一个全由白人组成的政府的总理以后，颁布了一系列种族隔离政策，对黑人及其他有色人种实行种族隔离。apartheid源自荷兰语apart'apart’和-heid'hood’，其字面义是“隔离”，“分离”。apaurtheid在1947年开一始见诸使用，现在除用以指“种族隔离（制）”，有时也指其他方面的隔离，如对吸烟者的隔离，是英语中最为通用的南非荷兰语借用词之一。=来自《旧约·但以理书》，古巴比伦国王Belshazzar（伯沙撒）在宫殿里设宴纵饮时，忽然看到一个神秘的手指在王宫墙上写看不懂的文字，后来，国王叫来被虏的囚徒犹太预言家Daniel（但以理）才搞明白，墙上的文字表示“大难临头”。如预言所示，伯沙撒当夜被杀，新国王由六十二岁的玛代人大利乌（Darius the Median）继任。正是由于这个典故，the finger on the wall（墙上的手指）或the writing on the wall（墙上的文字）常和动词see或read连用，用来形容“不祥之兆”。
