在古希腊时代，人们喜欢在市场等公共场所闲聊，很多政治家、思想家也喜欢在公共场所发表演讲，谈论哲学或政治。在谈及一些不便于明说的敏感话题或为了增加演说的趣味性，他们往往会采用讽喻的手法，用虚构的角色和故事来暗指、讽刺某人或某种现象。这种用来讽喻现实的虚构故事在希腊语中就被称为allegoria，由allos（不同的、另一个）+agoreuein（公开演说），字面意思就是“暗含另一层意思的公开演说”。英语单词allegory就来自希腊语allegoria。
