词源词根法
这是羽衣粉红或深红的一种热带大涉禽，汉语作“火烈鸟”或“红鹳”。据传，新大陆的西班牙探险者初次见到这种鸟时想拿佛兰芒人（Fleming）开玩笑，便给它取名Flamenco，在西班牙语意思就是“佛兰芒人”，因为佛兰芒人肤色微红，还素以性格活跃，衣着艳丽著称。该词转由葡萄牙语（flamengo）进入英语后，演变为flamingo这一形式。人们从民俗语源的角度往往将flamingo和西班牙语flama‘flame’（火焰）相联系。若将flamingo的词尾-o去掉，便是flaming。flam-ing在英语有“火红的”、“火焰似的”之义，这不正合该种鸟的羽色和佛兰芒人的肤色。
