在希腊神话中，戈耳工（gorgon）是三个长有尖牙、头生毒蛇的恐怖女妖，她们是海神福耳库斯与刻托的三个女儿，其中最有名的就是最小的美杜萨（Medusa）。据说美杜莎原本是个满头金发的美女。海神波塞冬被美杜莎所吸引，在雅典娜的神殿内强行奸污了美杜莎。雅典娜却迁怒于美杜莎，将其变为面目狰狞的女妖，满头金发也变成了毒蛇。
