这组词都有“疆界”“边境”“界限”的意思。与boundary和border相比, limit是最普通用词,含意较广,可用于任何最外面的限度、范围、分界等; bounds通常表示的不是看得见的边界(线),而是用于比喻意义,指人的行为; boundary主要用来指领土,尤其是地图上表示的边界、分界线,也可用来比喻知识、欲望等抽象事物的界限; border通常强调两个地区之间的边境,指沿分界线一带的土地。

这三个词共同的意思是“限制,范围”。它们的区别是：
1.limit指对空间、时间、程度、数目等划定的界线或极限,这个limit不允许超过或越过划定的界线或极限。limit也指由自然界、权威当局或协定、合同等规定的期限;bound多指受到实际上存在的或设想的某种界线的限制,常用复数形式。例如:
His business is confined within narrow limits.他的生意限定在很窄的范围之内。
She could never keep her temper within bounds.她不能控制她的脾气。
2.confine与bound意思很接近,但是bound通常含有从界限之内看问题的意思;confine则含有“禁闭”或“把…限制在…范围内”的意思,常用复数形式。例如:
The sick boy was kept within the confines of the house.这个得病的男孩被关在屋子里。

这组词都有“使…局限于”的意思。它们之间的区别是:
1.confine意味着不能超出一定的范围或限制。
2.limit除了具有confine上述的意思之外,还有“预先定下标准、界限,不许越过,不然将受惩罚或遭受不利”的意思。
3.confine的过去分词confined表示“受禁闭”; limit的过去分词limited表示“很有限”“贫乏”。
