17世纪末有一位名叫George Joseph Kamel(1661-1706)的基督教耶稣会传教士到菲律宾吕宋岛传教时，在岛上发现了一种美丽的观赏植物，便将它的标本带回欧洲。他不仅将此花引入欧洲，而且还写了他种植该植物的有关报告，发表于伦敦皇家学会的《哲学学报》（PhiLosophical Transac-ttons）上。瑞典博物学家林耐（Linnaeus，1701-1778）读了该报告，为了纪念这位传教士就按他的姓氐Kamel给这种植物取了个拉丁学名，这就是caInelliao英语名称是从拉丁文直接借过来的，汉语叫做“山茶花”。
