endeavour, attempt, try

这组词都有“尝试”或“设法 ”的意思。它们之间的区别是：

1.attempt只用作及物动词,强调“希望成功”,但不一定成功,是正式用语。例如:

We attempted a race.我们试图进行一次比赛。

It would be a waste of time to attempt the impossible.试图做办不到的事是浪费时间。

2.endeavour在作“努力”“尽力”解时,是褒义词,指为了完成某事而作出巨大的努力,尤其在面临困难的时候。例如:

The UN is endeavouring to establish peace.联合国正在为世界和平而努力。

Galieo endeavoured to prove that the earth rotates around the sun.伽利略尽力证明地球是绕着太阳转的。

3.try既可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词,强调通过多种努力,力争取得成功,还有“审讯,审理”的意思,常用于日常口语中。例如:

I don't think I can do it, but I'll try.我认为我做不来那个,但我愿试一试。

endeavour(s), bid, effort(s), exertion(s), pain(s)

这组词都可作“努力”解。它们的区别是：

effort(s)着重指动作的本身; endeavour(s)着重作出努力的认真和决心; exertion(s)着重于动作的积极性或剧烈性; bid着重于为达到某种企图而作出的努力; pain(s)侧重为完成某事花费气力。例如:

I will make a great effort to master English我会努力掌握英语。

The cabinet is making all possible endeavours to bring about national economic stabilization.政府内阁将尽最大努力使国家经济趋于稳定。

I was quite hot and tired after all my exertions.用力干后,我又热又累。

Our Department is making a bid for the interdepartmental basketball championship.我们系正力求夺取系际的篮球赛冠军。

attempt，try，endeavour，strive

这些动词都含有“试图，努力，力图”之意。

attempt较正式用词，侧重已经开始，且希望完成，但常隐含着不一定有预期的结果。

try普通用词，可与attempt换用，但强调努力或尝试，后跟不定式表示努力或争取；后跟动名词表示尝试。

endeavour正式用词，指尽最大努力、认真地克服困难去做某事。

strive和endeavour一样，表示付出巨大努力，但strive侧重劳累与紧张，而不强调努力的结果。
